COLLAGE AS NARRATIVE: WEAVING THE MATERIAL IMAGE
Ages 16-29
Fall 2023, Online
In this distance learning workshop, student fellows will explore collage as an approach to personal narrative––editing together moving and still images, as well as incorporating methods of material collage, works on paper, and handmade animations. They’ll draw inspiration from the surrealist movement, as well as referencing contemporary collage techniques in art and media, such as the work of Terrance Nance. Final projects will include a variety of experimental personal films, using combinations of video, text and collaged animation. In the context of a virtual workshop, we will also practice engaging directly with the "limitations" of a zoom screen––with fellows creating and using "screen modifiers" (textured or cut-out paper, prisms, etc.) to make collaged images with their computer or phone cameras in real time, documenting parts of this during workshop as a collaborative collage piece that will be shown along with final projects. Limited to 9 student fellows.
