HOME STUDIO: CRAFT-BASED STOP MOTION ANIMATION
Ages 16-29
Spring 2023, Online
In this distance-learning workshop, student fellows will explore the possibilities of stop motion animation based in crafts of their own design. Working with handmade papers, modeling clay, pipe cleaners, yarn, newspaper, and more, they’ll cut, fold, paste, shape, and construct to create anything from creatures to collages, representational to abstract designs. Using a free stop motion app, they’ll experiment with different kinds of sequencing, narrative and non-narrative, and incorporate spoken and written words, phrases, or poems, if desired. They’ll follow their own interests in all aspects of the process, drawing from observation, memory, and dreams. In group discussion, they’ll consider the value of a still image, and of an animated one, referencing early examples of animation and exploring the medium’s unique ability to illustrate and reimagine time, reality, and fantasy. They’ll keep journals and participate in generative in-class exercises to spark discovery, ultimately creating personally expressive, artful animations that begin in the material world and expand into imagined ones. Their work will be shared on the program website and at a public exhibition. Limited to 9 student fellows.
