“LISTEN!”: SONIC ART
Ages 16-29
Winter 2023, Online
How does a poem “sound” on the page? What distinguishes spoken word from ordinary language? How do we perceive an image in relation to sound? How does sound—or silence—shape our understanding of our environment? What does it mean to listen, to hear? Through readings, viewings, discussion, and exercises, student fellows will explore these and other questions about sonic design. They’ll begin by listening, discovering the work of composers and sound artists like Pauline Oliveros (link) and Maryanne Amacher (link), as well as poets and performers like Hugo Ball (link), Gil-Scott Heron (link), Jaap Blonk (link), and Tanya Tagaq (link). They’ll experiment with their own field recordings, both audio and video; their own music; and their own poetry, written and spoken, with voice as their primary instrument. Over the seven weeks, they’ll develop a range of personally expressive creative projects driven by auditory experience, from sound pieces to short videos to spoken word. Their work will be shared through a public exhibition and on the program website. Limited to 9 student fellows.
