THE SOUND OF HOME: EXPERIMENTS IN AUDIO
Ages 16-29
Summer 2023, Online & JHU-MICA Film Centre
In this workshop student fellows will learn basic sound recording and editing concepts by gathering and enhancing the ambient sounds of the spaces they live in. They’ll focus on the intimate details of life, from the warm buzz of laughter in a kitchen down the hall, to the sharp softness of a whisper, to muted traffic or weather noise drifting in from outside. With these snippets of everyday life, they’ll explore different acoustic properties, from fundamentals (amplitude, frequency, and timbre) to more complex concepts (natural reverberations/echoes, phase cancellation, proximity effect). They’ll assemble images to support their recordings, but the emphasis will be on active listening, engaging with the immediate world through the ears. In final video projects the relationship between audio and visual elements might range from narrative or representational into something more experimental, reflecting surprising discoveries and new ways of hearing. Their work will be shared on the program website and through a public exhibition. Limited to 9 student fellows.
