WIDENING THE WORLD OF AN IMAGE: PHOTOGRAPHY & EKPHRASTIC POETRY Photo Book Available
Ages 16-29
Spring 2020, Online
In this distance learning workshop, student fellows will engage in the art of ekphrastic poetry, exploring the connection between word and image. Fellows will examine and then photograph the compelling spaces, objects, and people in their home. Fellows will use this group collection of images as inspiration for their poems. Fellows will be expected to complete two polished poems with at least one poem inspired by fellow photographs. Using cellphone cameras and online platforms, fellows will be required to connect with the instructor and group in order to share their progress, provide feedback on peer work, add to the workshop's image collection, and receive instructor feedback. Fellows will be challenged to go beyond description of an image and pushed to think about what is beyond or outside the camera's lens, what has been ignored or left out, what adjacent worlds might be of interest. Fellow should expect to spend four hours per week on this workshop. Their poems and images will be shared on the program website and through a virtual group exhibition. Limited to 8 student fellows.
